The Muppet Christmas Carol is a 1992 Christmas film directed by Brian Henson (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jerry Juhl. Adapted from the 1843 novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, it stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge.

I think we all know the story of Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Set in Victorian London it is the tale of the redemption of miserly skinflint, Ebenezer Scrooge, a man consumed by avarice and greed. On Christmas eve he is visited by the sprit of his dead business partner, Jacob Marley who warns Scrooge that if he continues along the same path he is destined to spend eternity wandering the Earth as a lost soul, shackled by the chains he has forged in life.

Over the course of the night, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who show him his past, the present and his future convincing him to change his ways, opening his heart to the true meaning of Christmas.

I grew up with the Muppets so for me this film has an element of nostalgia and is, I feel one of the better Muppet movies.

Michael Caine gives a very credible, dramatic performance as Scrooge, playing it completely straight leaving the humour and craziness to the Muppet cast.

There is nothing you can’t love about this film. You have Michael Caine as Scrooge, Kermit as Bob Cratchit and The Great Gonzo as our narrator, Charles Dickens.

This film has become a Christmas classic and a much loved Christmas Eve tradition in our household.
